The Poe-lice and the Harvard PhD.

July 25, 2009 · Leave a Comment

gates

It was a normal sunny afternoon in Cambridge.

Bostonians were all probably in the midst of the lunch hustle.

Srgt. James Crowley was patrolling a local neighborhood when he noticed something suspicious. There was a man who seemed to be having difficulty entering a home. He was of dark complexion, late 50’s maybe, medium stature, and seemed to move with a limp. James had allegedly just gotten word of an alleged attempted robbery in that precise area.

As he pulls up to the residence, he notices that the gentleman had now successfully made his way into the home through the back door. Crowley throws the whip into park, takes his sunglasses off of his face, opens the patrol car door and proceeds to walk up the porch steps. The Gentleman opens the screen door as Crowley politely asks him to step outside.

What happened next has been in heated debate between the Cambridge Police department and the Harvard University family, of which our prospective perpetrator happens to be a beloved member.

Busting Ads, One Subway at a Time!

If only we could get street artists Epoxy, Mr. Talion, Baveux & Kone to slap some of their Photoshop interface “press ons “over top of a few ads out here.  Their work, although small in scale and lacking of words, speak in volumes. Every day we see the large perfected faces of models, celebs, and athletes injected into advertisements. Photoshop allows the fine line between real and fake to be virtually erased.  Their Ad-Busting missions are witty, hilarious, and after receiving over 200,000 views super popular . Much Props.

Sundance Film Festival– Shorts

July 25, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I’m all about documentaries and independent films. Rather than a huge studio production, complete with special effects and a million dollar budget, they bring about a facet of the film industry that often comes up lacking: raw, unadulterated emotion. It may be in an unexpected setting, an unimaginable plot line or simply as a reflection of everyday life, but with just a few choice actors and a good story, I love nothing more than to be enraptured by one of these films.

Most of you have heard of Sundance, if not seen a film that was shown at the festival. I decided to post a couple of the short films that had won awards, so whether you’re bored at work, at home or just need some kind of respite, here’s a little treat to get yo mind working. THEY COME IN HD, so you don’t have to worry about the quality of them.

Gowanas, Brooklyn
“A young girl investigates her curious teacher’s life in the short that inspired the Oscar-nominated film “Half Nelson.” Winner of the Short Filmmaking Award at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.”

Voice of An Angel
An aging woman and the man tuning her piano form a relationship rooted in the power of music. An official selection of the 2001 Sundance Film Festival.

Five Feet High and Rising
Victor, a twelve year-old boy growing up on New York City’s Lower East Side experiences what growing up is all about. Winner of the Short Filmmaking Award at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival.

It’s Not Bombing Baghdad. It’s Bombing Walls.

I spend most of my life on the NJ Transit, Northeast Corridor line to be specific. When the lull of riding the train gets to be too much, I find entertainment in looking out the window. As the train zips past the stops, Edison, Metuchen, Metro Park, so on and so forth, I begin to notice all of the graffiti scattered along the tracks. I start to really take a liking the abstracted letters reduced to florescent spray painted one worded frescoes.

Graffiti.

Dope Girl Thursday: Wa Boogie!

July 24, 2009 · Leave a Comment

And it goes a little something like this…

Wa

Occupation: B-Girl
Resides: Piscataway, New Jersey

Wa is living proof that big things can sometimes come in small packages. I first saw Wa in a commercial she was featured in. It was short and sweet and showed her looking in the mirror at herself dancing her ass off. “This girl can move” I thought to myself as I watched her pop lock and break dance. Then a few weeks later I saw her in the  dining hall and approached her about my Dope Girl project. She looked at me sort of crazy but smiled and gave me her contact information. After that the rest was hisherstory.

A few days later we were together doing the shoot. She was a real trooper, often doing moves in the middle of the empty parking lot we shot in–minus any protective gear. We did this image in a matter of 5 or 10 frames, pretty impressive. When I asked Wa what being dope meant to her, she said its about not being afraid be different. Home girl definitely lives by her word–she’s not your average. I have nothing but respect for a person like that.

What songs SUMMER-IZE the season?

July 23, 2009 · Leave a Comment

oie_ipod_bikini

As the melanin in my skin is being put to the test, I lift my head and begin dusting the sand off my kelly green bikini. The predominant frown line in my forehead is in full force as I squint into the screen of my IPOD. Around and around goes my rotating thumb through the archives of my soul. As I stumble upon a few songs that irrefutably remind me of the sweetness of summer… I ask myself: “WHAT MADE ME JUST HIT PLAY?”

I have come to realize a few things about the summah-time…

1.) The women of the East Coast look better (after enduring the brutality of a Philadelphia winter there is no way chicks from L.A. glow like we do in the sun).
2.) Love or lust, the flings are better (we are all wearing 5 layers less than we were 3 months ago, what do you expect?)
3.) The music that is throbbing from our car stereos, BBQ’s, house parties, and discotecs is so. bloody. good. From hip-hop to oldies, pop to grunge.

So, at your next social gathering  I hope the following comes up in conversation:

TOP TEN SUMMER SONGS:
It was hard as shit to only chose 10. Download accordingly, my friends.

1. Summertime- DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince
Obviously. Now, if for some bizzarro reason, you don’t know this one, you should politely ask someone to punch you in the face.

2. Santeria- Sublime
This track, with its reggae melody and subtle messages, makes you wonder just how much weed needs to be smoked to write such a phat-ass song.
Word up, LBC.

3. Juicy- Notorious B.I.G.
This will be played at my funeral. Enough said.

4. Under the Boardwalk-The Drifters
I don’t care what anyone says. We all ache to shake the sand out of our buttcracks hair after being felt up by someone whose kisses taste like a cherry Flavo-O-Pop popsicle. (Yes, the ones in the plastic sleeve).

5. Is this Love- Bob Marley
I know many of you are thinking that I should have said Jammin’ but seriously, anything by this man should be in constant rotation during the summer. This song just makes me feel good. Real good.

6. My Girl- The Temptations
Call me an old head, but The Temptations just do it to me. It’s hard not to fall in love when this melody infiltrates the air around you. Play this at any party and the bitches will be wild’n.

7. California Love- Tupac featuring Dr. Dre
I swear, I only feel gangster when I have my windows down and this song is blaring. Even if I am only cruising through white suburbia, I feel like I’m in Oakland.

8. Still Not a Player- Big Punisher featuring Joe
Sweet Jesus, what list would be complete without Big Pun? This song will make you start a block party and date a Puerto Rican. Even my grandmother knew the “Boriqua… morena” breakdown.

9. Light My Fire- The Doors
1967 psychedelic hippy summer. Sweet guitar riffs. The time for hesitation is through.

10. In honor of the almighty Mr. Michael Jackson, there is a spot on this list for all of his songs (my own personal preference would be anything from Thriller).
Still bummed out. Rest in Peace.

So remember…
Make love, not war, listen to ONLY good music, eat your popsicles, and enjoy the heat Phat Kids.

Education in America– Yes (No Matter The Circumstance), We Can

July 22, 2009 · 1 Comment

At the 2009 NAACP Convention this year, President Obama delivered an epic message that will surely resound for ages. Although it happened just last week, it’s already been likened to MLK Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech— full of promise and conviction, possibilities and hopes for the future.

FYI: Did you know he writes all his own speeches? Brilliant. President Bush has written NONE…no big surprise there.

“We’ve got to say to our children:

Yes, if you’re African American, the odds of growing up amid crimes and gangs are higher.
Yes, if you live in a poor neighborhood, you will face challenges that someone in a wealthy suburb doesn’t have to face.
Those are important thins to recognize from the beginning…

But, that’s not a reason to get bad grades,
that’s not a reason to cut class,
that’s not a reason to give up on your education and drop out of school.
No one has ever written your destiny for you– your destiny is in your hands, and don’t you forget that.

No excuses. You get that education, all those hardships will make you stronger, better able to compete–

Yes, we can.

It’s because there is no stronger weapon against inequality and no better path to opportunity than an education that can unlock a child’s God-given potential.
