It was a normal sunny afternoon in Cambridge.
Bostonians were all probably in the midst of the lunch hustle.
Srgt. James Crowley was patrolling a local neighborhood when he noticed something suspicious. There was a man who seemed to be having difficulty entering a home. He was of dark complexion, late 50’s maybe, medium stature, and seemed to move with a limp. James had allegedly just gotten word of an alleged attempted robbery in that precise area.
As he pulls up to the residence, he notices that the gentleman had now successfully made his way into the home through the back door. Crowley throws the whip into park, takes his sunglasses off of his face, opens the patrol car door and proceeds to walk up the porch steps. The Gentleman opens the screen door as Crowley politely asks him to step outside.

What happened next has been in heated debate between the Cambridge Police department and the Harvard University family, of which our prospective perpetrator happens to be a beloved member.
So, the cop was white and the guy in the house happened to be the esteemed (black) Harvard Professor; Mr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. He is the Chair of the Afro-American Studies Department and director of W.E.B. Du Bois Institute. After exchanging some words to with Crowley, Professor Gates found himself in handcuffs and riding in the back of a police vehicle. So how the F did ish go down this way?
According to what was said in court earlier this week, Professor Gates refused to exit his home, stating that he was in fact, the home owner. He also asked why the officer was there. Crowley told him that he has gotten a report of an attempted robbery at that address. The officer proceeded to ask him for proof of his residence, which Gates provided along with a Harvard University identification card.
Many sources claim that Sgt. Crowley proceeded to ask him about his presence in the home and grew irritated as Gates’ responses were becoming more and more hostile (understandable…I just showed you my driver’s license with this address on it and somehow you are still standing in my kitchen? WTF dude?) Plus, Gates was just getting in from China that day. Who wouldn’t be pissy after that flight?
So, to make a long story short, Crowley arrested Gates for Disorderly Conduct due to his attitude and composure during their encounter.
Which took place in Gates’ home.
Under the pretenses that Gates was a thief.
Calling for the obviously necessary back up.
IN GATES’ HOME.
The sergeant of the Cambridge PD arrested a 5’4’ man with a cane and glasses on disorderly conduct? Oh wait… it might have been because although being the acclaimed scholar that he is, Professor Gates got loud about Crowley being a racist and he being a “Black man in America.” Furthermore, Gates aaaalso made various comments about Crowley’s mother. Forgive me, but…DAMN. I must admit it was hard to keep my giggles quiet at the office when I read that on CNN.
SO! Here we are ladies and gentlemen, the classic case of the almighty RACE CARD (DUN-DUN- DUN). Abuse or legit? White cops and black males have had quite the tumultuous love affair for the last…what? few centuries? Sure, without a doubt, racial profiling exists. I have been the lucky recipient of all sorts of ignorant bullshit. Cops have called me everything from a “Black female” (not even close) to asking me if I am in this country legally (“Feel free to deport me back to New Jersey, officer.”).
However, I can honestly say that I think it may have been all due to the fact that maybe, just maybe Gates did get disorderly and ultimately pissed Crowley off. What I cannot excuse is the fact that due to social standards, the strength of prejudice, and the subsequent abuse of power, Crowley’s fuse is probably much shorter when dealing with a person of color.
Thanks to some Harvard lawyers, all charges against Gates were dropped.
Should this man have been arrested? Negative.
Should Crowley apologize for the public humiliation of Professor Gates?
