RIP To A Legend

Michael-Jackson

From his unforgettable lyrics to his ridiculous choreography, Michael Jackson was a one man phenomenon. His music muddled the lines we drew to separate ourselves and had us all united for his talent. And granted, his life was a whirlwind of cover stories and outrageous claims, but each move that thrusted him into the harsh scope of the media had us in a rabid frenzy to find out details because his life was our human interest piece. After all, can we really discredit any story that revolves around the man who could make us all crave to have our own embroidered, red jacket and a matching white glove? Who could make entire crowds form staggered lines in various renditions of “Thriller”? Who could endlessly be cranked up in the car, in the club, in the bedroom?

I choked when I heard the news, like most of you probably did. I remember being being five or six years old and mesmerized by “Black or White”, the first video I had seen of his. I was spending the summer in India, of all places, yet the images his music had conjured (especially the Indian girl doing Bharathnatyam with my man MJ beside her) still felt comforting in the sticky hot weather with its sun-kissed inhabitants. That man had so much love to give. It’s hard to imagine, having such a musical legend pass on without warning and without a much needed goodbye. His comeback tour would have been incredible to witness, seeing an international treasure revitalize the music we’ve put so much faith in– but we will never stop. His discography was extensive, guaranteeing that there is a Michael Jackson for every age, every genre and every mood. May his legacy live on and he rest in peace.

The Dope Girl Project Series: Every Thursday!

June 25, 2009 · 2 Comments

For the next 15 weeks we will have Dope Girl Thursday.

Each week we will post a new portrait of a new girl that was featured in THE DOPE GIRL PROJECT, a photo series created by me Nakeya B. (and features the other two-thirds of ATEtraks, SamSun and Doctor Sanchez). Be sure to check in every Thursday for the next dope lady.

Occupation: Photographer
Resides: Brooklyn, NY
www.marianasheppard.com

We both met out of our passion for photography. Somehow she found my work and we just have been kicking it with eachother ever since. When I first met her two of her features stuck out he most.

First was her hair. She had the coolest afro. When I asked her her nationality she replied Dominican. What’s cooler than a Dominican with an afro?

Second was her accent. Although she resides in Brooklyn, the rich culture of New Orleans runs through her veins and seep out her pores. Anyone who couldn’t pick up on her thick accent just isn’t listening.

We shot in Williamsburg in April and believe it or not, it was freezing. We found this American flag spray painted on the garage door and thought it would be cool to shoot in front of it. The Black Power fist and the au-natural ‘fro were small ironic symbols Mari felt she wanted to portray. Her photo came out to be one of my favories in the series. Nothing but L.O.V.E.

If Pain and Oppression had a lovechild, it would be named FLAMENCO.

flamenco

With it’s roots stemming from the early modern era of Southern Spain, flamenco was the expression of persecuted people during the 1500′s. It was first demonstrated by the populations of Gypsies, Arabs, Jews, and Muslims. Gypsies migrated from the Northern regions of India in the 14th and 15th centuries, bringing traditional dances with them (what is really good SamSun?). Flamenco was later influenced by Arabic elements as well as native Spanish elements. During this era, Gypsies were oppressed as they did not abide by Catholicism or by strict Spanish Society. Flamenco was performed in hiding but later gained popularity when it was performed by non-gypsies and Christians in the early 1900′s.  Consisting of 3 main parts; “El Cante”, El Baile”, and “El Toque”, the deep, gut-wrenching tones of the flamenco singer express the pain of oppression and persecution. It was only later in the 1860′s did the guitar become a main component of the art-form. Originally, the Dancer (el baile) moved to his/her own, un-choreographed rhythm. Slamming their feet as a way of expressing the anger associated with forced conformity.
Now, how do YOU express yourself?

new resolutions

January 1st rolls around and we all rush to make resolutions that might actually hold. Going to the gym? Been done. Going on a diet? Let’s be real–you really think that’s going to last? I had stumbled across this site a while ago and thought it was appropriate to share with you hungry little ones. And if you’re questionining why I think something like this is being posted in the middle of the year, let’s not kid ourselves: it’s never too late to start making resolutions about our lives. Again, here’s some of my favorites but feel free to check them out and find some of your own here.

Janet Jackson: Walking Sex-Machine

June 24, 2009 · Leave a Comment

jan1986

Let’s hop back to the 90′s and recall Ms. Jackson’s golden years. I’m in love with the cover art for her album, Control.  Not to mention her sick sense of fashion, now you can see who inspires Rhi-Rhi. Anywho, Janet, the icon and  sex-symbol, embodied a level of feminism and independence most women and men adored at that time.  Can’t forget that Rolling Stones cover either. With that being said, here’s to embracing and dishing out our inner-sexy in heavy doses.

Addicted To The Albertini

June 23, 2009 · 3 Comments

Tamara

You’ve already heard our take on W.O.E. (Women Of Excellence), so allow us an introduction to a woman who’s worthy of such a title. Tamara Albertini hails from the almighty BK, but finds residence nowadays in Long Island. She’s 1/2 of the fashion duo of Albertini Addiction (AA), a jewelery/style brand that she founded along with her twin sister, Tamika (together, they’re known as the Albertini Twinz). They tackle anything from original jewelry pieces to accessories (including hair clips, headbands and bags), and even some clothing, debuting their first collection this fall. On top of that, their services also include wardrobe styling and the artistic direction for photoshoots. You might have already been acquainted with them in their photo spreads in OneWay2 Magazine and various fashion shows, including their most recent showcase at the StonyBrook’s Black Womyn’s Movement. We weren’t able to interview Tamika, who handles the clothing design aspect of AA, but we were fortunate enough to shoot Tamara and have her let us in on the secrets and future plans for Albertini Addiction…
